Sponsorship For Samaná Dogs

Here Our First Spay And Neuter Candidates!

This is Dona Rocky. Kim writes about her:

"Dona Rocky was rescued by a very elderly Dominican man from a sack that someone had thrown out on the side of the road. She recently had four puppies for which we are presently looking for homes."

Dona Rocky has found a home and is now called Leica.

Also her 2 daughters Lara and Loba, now 6 months old, were spayed on this occasion:

Loba is being prepared for surgery.

Lara is wide awake again!

Loba has been adopted by Peace Corps worker Courtney and will travel with her to the United States at the end of Courtney's service in Samaná.

This is Crema Honduras. Crema lived on the side of the road in at the entrance to the town of Samana. She has previously been hit by a vehicle and has a pelvic injury resulting in a permanent limp. Crema has not had a litter yet and desperately needs to be spayed before she comes into her first heat. Crema has now a foster home with volunteer Corinne and is called Pupette.

…and in post-operative care.

Chivi is a two year old female who lives in a mechanics yard, chained during the day and loose at night. She has already had two litters and her young owner would like to have her spayed before she becomes pregnant again.

And she won't! Here is Chivi getting prepared for spaying.

Machito is Chivi's five months old son and one of the surviving puppies from her second litter. His owner wants him neutered so that he will stay home and protect his property rather than run in the streets looking for females and be hit by a vehicle, like so many others. Machito has moved to a new home in the meantime, too far away to be brought to this operative. He will be neutered at the next opportunity. His sister Lakita was spayed instead.

Linda is about 3 years old. She has had puppies three times and just had 6. Four already have homes.

The other two balls of fur are still looking for their people.

Unless Linda knows you, she is protective about her home. But if you are her friend, she is very playful. She loves to chase the other dogs, the pigs, the cats and the chickens around the yard but doesn't hurt any of them.Linda's physical condition will improve tremendously once she is spayed.

Carocita is about 2 years old. She has had pups three times and is nursing 3 at the moment. The owners say she is very protective of the house and the children following the kids wherever they go. She likes to play, steal eggs and sneak into the house and jump on the bed when no one is looking.

Kim had to leave Samaná immediately after the operative with Dr. Labdon's team to go to Sosúa and assist Judy during the World Vets operative in the second week of November where 149 animals were spayed and neutered. She promised to send OP-photos of Linda and Carocita as soon as possible.

News Of Success

This is Diana. Her owner, Francisca de la Rosa, tells us about her: "My dog's name is Diana. She is black with white feet. She is very good to me. She had puppies once and we were able to find homes for them but it wasn't easy. She had 6! . I don't know if she is pregnant again or not but I don't want her to have more puppies. There are so many dogs here without homes. I want her to be operated on I know there is a risk but I hope that the veterinarian does a very good job because she is the best dog I have ever had. THANK YOU! Francisca de la Rosa"

Diana has found a sponsor in Santo Domingo! A friend of Dolores, who will bring the surgical instruments for Dr. Francis to Samanà on the 8th of August, will pay for the spaying of Diana!

Diana's owners couldn't bring her to this operative. She will get spayed next time. Julie, a Rottweiler mix, used to produce puppies for sale in Samaná, was spayed instead of her.

Julie on the table…

Julie in the recovery and hopefully on her way to a better life…

Negrita was scheduled to be spayed in June and escaped from the person who brought her to the operative. She was found after 21 days on the street and Juan her young owner was very happy to have her back. He will personally bring her this time so she will not be afraid.

We have terribly sad news about Negrita: She became a victim of a rash of dog poisonings at a beach close to her home! Kim is asking you all in the name of Negrita to please sign our petition to stop dog poisonings as a means of population control in the Dominican Republic!

Boca Negra was spayed instead of Negrita.

Boca Negra and her companions live at the local dump.

Boca Negra in surgery. She won't give birth at the dump anymore…

Spunky with her first litter and thanks to our operative it will be her last. Her owners were concerned that she lost so much weight and stopped playing when she had her puppies. Finding homes was very difficult.

Spunky, with a tape on her head saying that she is No 29, waiting to get spayed.

Now it's her turn: Spunky intubated and under anaesthesia.

Bola: This beautiful young female was dumped in a Samana’s central park. This lucky girl has found herself a job with the security guard at the local whale museum. Her contract reads: Food and shelter but no puppies. We will be glad to help her.

Bola in the queue waiting for her operation.

She'll keep her job at the whale museum…
